The £9,000 heat-pump grant: which homes qualify?

Some off-gas-grid homes can now receive £9,000 towards a heat pump. Learn which fuels and systems qualify and how the process works.

The higher £9,000 heat-pump grant is real, but it is not a universal offer for every home or every air source heat pump.

The short answer

Qualifying off-gas-grid properties in England and Wales can receive £9,000 towards certain air-to-water or ground-source heat pumps when replacing oil or LPG heating. Other eligible homes commonly remain at £7,500, so the connection and existing fuel matter.

What matters most

  • The £9,000 level is aimed at particular off-gas-grid properties replacing oil or LPG.
  • Many other eligible air-to-water and ground-source projects remain at £7,500.
  • The chosen installer applies and the homeowner confirms the application with Ofgem.
  • A grant reduces cost; it does not replace heat-loss work, emitter checks or system design.

What the £9,000 headline means

Updated grant categories took effect on 21 July 2026. They include £9,000 for eligible air-to-water and ground-source heat pumps in certain properties without a mains gas connection when the system replaces oil or LPG heating.

The uplift is targeted rather than universal. A home can be rural without meeting the specific category, and an off-grid home can still fall into a different grant level depending on the heating system being replaced.

What off gas grid means in practice

The relevant question is whether the property has a mains gas connection, not whether it looks rural or is located a long way from a town. The current heating fuel then helps determine which grant category applies.

A proposal should record the existing system accurately. Guessing oil, LPG, direct electric or another fuel can produce the wrong expectation before the installer has even considered whether the proposed heat pump qualifies.

The current grant levels in context

Government guidance lists £7,500 for many eligible air-to-water and ground-source heat pumps, £9,000 for the specified off-grid oil and LPG categories, £2,500 for eligible air-to-air heat pumps and £5,000 for eligible biomass boilers.

The values are only one part of the regulations. Technology type, existing heating, capacity, certification and the application date can all matter. Use the live guidance rather than relying on an old comparison article or a screenshot of a grant table.

Why the survey still matters

A heat pump needs to be sized around the home’s heat loss. The design must consider emitters, flow temperatures, hot-water demand, outdoor-unit siting, noise, electrical supply and the way the household wants the heating to operate.

A grant does not make an unsuitable design suitable. Nor does a higher grant automatically make a heat pump cheaper to run than the existing system. Running cost depends on performance, tariffs, controls, fabric and behaviour.

From indicative estimate to final proposal

An online estimate can establish the likely route and capture the property’s current fuel, size and obvious constraints. The survey then measures what matters, tests the assumptions and produces the design information needed for a final proposal.

The chosen installer applies for the grant. The homeowner confirms that the installer is acting for them, and an approved grant is deducted from the installation price. The quote and invoice should make that treatment visible.

Before accepting, check which surveys, heat-loss calculations, emitters, hot-water work, electrical changes and making-good are included. A grant comparison that ignores the full installation scope can make unlike proposals appear equivalent. The useful figure is the supported cost of the complete, designed job, with assumptions and exclusions written down.

Confirm the category, then design the home around comfort.

The £9,000 grant can materially change the budget for an eligible oil- or LPG-heated off-grid home. It is worth checking early, but not using it as the only reason to choose a system.

Vireo’s heat-pump route begins with an indicative result and moves into survey-led design. That is where grant eligibility, heat loss, emitters, hot water, siting and electrical work can be brought into one properly checked proposal.

Before you move forward.

Does every off-grid home get £9,000?

No. The higher value applies to specified grant categories. The existing heating system and proposed technology must match the current rules.

Can an on-gas-grid home still receive support?

Yes, many eligible air-to-water and ground-source projects remain supported at £7,500, subject to the scheme requirements.

Is the grant paid to the homeowner?

The installer applies and the approved value is deducted from the amount the homeowner pays. It should appear on the quotation and invoice.
